What this site does

The public Kotta website sets no cookies. It loads no advertising tags, no social media embeds and no third-party scripts. Nothing is stored on your device, and nothing follows you when you leave.

That is why you have not been shown a cookie banner. A banner asking permission to store something on your device, when nothing is stored on your device, is noise.

The typefaces, images and scripts this site needs are served from this domain, so visiting a page does not make a request to anyone else.

We do count visits

We measure how the site is used, because we cannot improve a page we cannot see being read. We do it without storing anything on your device. Specifically, when you open a page we record:

which of our pages you opened, and when;
the website you arrived from — the site’s name only, such as “linkedin.com”, never the page you were reading there;
any campaign tag in the link you followed, if it had one;
your country, your browser and whether you are on a phone or a computer;
which buttons you pressed, whether you began filling in a form, and if a form refused your answer, which question it refused — never what you typed into it; and
a one-way hash of your IP address, salted and truncated, rather than the address itself.

There is no identifier that survives your visit. We generate a random reference held in your browser’s memory so that opening three pages counts as one visit rather than three, and it is discarded the moment you close the tab. Nothing is written to your device, so we cannot recognise you when you come back, and we do not try to. This counts journeys, not people.

If your browser sends a “do not track” signal, we record nothing at all.

Two systems do this: our own, which writes to our database in London, and Vercel’s Web Analytics, which is cookieless and served from this domain rather than from anyone else’s. Both are described in the Privacy Policy.

The forms

When you submit the contact or request-access form, what you typed is sent to our server and stored. That is described in the Privacy Policy. No cookie is set to do it.

Our hosting provider

Our hosting provider may set a strictly necessary cookie in limited circumstances — for example to route a request correctly or to protect the site from attack. Cookies of that kind are exempt from the consent requirement because the site cannot be delivered securely without them. They are not used to profile you or to track you between sites.

If this changes

The measurement described above stores nothing on your device, which is why you were not asked. If we ever add anything that does — a cookie, a stored identifier, a third-party tag, anything that would let us recognise you on a later visit or follow you to another site — we will do all of the following before it runs:

update this page and the Privacy Policy;
ask for your permission first — nothing non-essential will load until you have given it;
make refusing as easy as accepting, with Accept all, Reject non-essential and Manage preferences given equal weight;
remember your choice, and let you change it; and
add a “Cookie settings” link to the footer so the choice stays reachable.

Until then there is no preference to manage, which is why no such link appears in the footer.

Controlling cookies yourself

Every major browser lets you see the cookies a site has set, block them, or delete them. The controls are usually under privacy or security settings. Blocking cookies entirely will not affect this website, because it does not use any.
